Did you know that over 500,000 qualified students will be rejected by public universities and colleges in 2026? The class of 2025 matriculants achieved a record high of matric results, with over 345,000 bachelor’s passes. This marked a huge milestone in basic education, but it means nothing if the majority will be rejected by public universities and colleges in 2026.

Why Does The Crisis Exist?

  • The infrastructure and staffing in South Africa cannot keep pace with the demand, hence causing a limited university capacity.
  • The current financial model is unsustainable, causing a threat to access and quality. This causes a shortfall in funding.
  • Because there is an instability within the governance, this causes leadership debates, disagreements, and managerial inefficiencies, which leads to institutions weakening.
  • There is also an imbalance in genders. More female students complete their matriculation than the male students. The male students drop out between Grades 10 and 12.

Challenges Of The Crisis

Thousands of qualified students are being rejected from opportunities, causing unemployment, which is already a big crisis in South Africa itself.

Males dropping out of school early causes them to become vulnerable to criminal activity and social ills, causing a risk to society.

The country’s need for skilled professionals is threatened by the bottleneck, causing economical consequences.

How Will The Crisis Affect The Economy In South Africa

This crisis, which is characterized by shortages in funds, student debt, and capacity limits, directly obstructs economic growth by boosting an increase in a skills gap, specifically in STEM fields. This crisis generates high youth unemployment, increases poverty, and limits long-term GDP growth by failing to create a top-qualified, industry-ready workforce.

Key impacts on the South African economy include:

  • Intensified Skills Shortage: A decrease in quality and increase in dropout rates, specifically in the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), indicates that industries won’t be able to find skilled workers, obstructing the growth in technology.
  • Consistent Youth Unemployment: Because of the growing unemployment rate of about 42.6%, the struggle of the system to prepare the students for the workforce means that many of the graduates stay unemployed or underemployed, which is usually referred to as disguised unemployment.
  • Financial Pressure: The ongoing unreliability of the struggling NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme) and increasing unpaid student debt create financial instability in the state, which is also impacted by it.
  • Reduced Economic Mobility: This crisis lessens the access to higher education for the less fortunate students, which limits social mobility and decreases the general earning potential and productivity in the workforce.
  • Declining Global Competitiveness: with the universities and colleges struggling with lack of funding to maintain their standards, along with the many other struggles, the workforce lacks preparation for 4IR (Fourth Industrial Revolution) demands, hence weakening the country’s global position.
