ABET Level 1 serves as the foundational phase of Adult Basic Education and Training, marking it as an entry point. This is where adult learners get equipped with basic literacy and numeracy skills. This level is equivalent to a Grade 1 to Grade 3 in the traditional schooling system and is mainly used to help reduce functional illiteracy in adult individuals. 

Main Focus:

• Language and Communication: Basic skills development in reading and writing things such as simple notices, messages, lists and invitations.
• Numeracy: The basic understanding of numbers, counting, and simple everyday calculations.

ABET Level 2 is the Second phase of Adult Basic Education and Training in South Africa. It is the second step for adults in learning foundational literacy and numeracy. This level is equivalent to Grade 4 to Grade 6 in the traditional schooling system. 

Main Focus:

• Language and Communication: Basic literacy, functional communication
• Numeracy: practical mathematics (e.g. decimals and percentages)
• Practical Life Skills: Improves one's ability to operate efficiently within their community or workplace through better reading comprehension, improved logic and stronger problem-solving skills.

ABET Level 3 is the third phase of Adult Basic Education and Training, designed for adults and youths who have missed out on or haven’t completed formal schooling. It serves as the halfway mark in the ABET learning journey. This level is equivalent to Grade 7 or Grade 8 in the traditional schooling system. 

Main Focus:

• Language and Communication: Teaches the learners to read and understand fairly complex texts, make simple inferences, to summarize information fluently, and communicate efficiently for social scenarios and basic professional situations.
• Numeracy: Teaches learners how to utilize basic mathematical concepts to everyday situations, like managing your own personal finances, cooking (Ingredient amounts, etc), and understanding time, shapes and patterns.
• Practical Life Skills: Focuses on real-world scenarios to help individuals navigate a complex social community, including operating modern technology (e.g. an ATM machine), taking telephone messages, and practicing health and safety to protect and make the environment a safe space.

The individuals who should consider ABET are adults and youths who have missed out on formal schooling or for those who need to gain the foundational skills to improve their employment opportunities and skillsets.

Adults and Youth Without Basic Education

• Individuals seeking foundational skills: Those who need to gain basic foundational skills by learning how to read, write, and do basic math to function efficiently in daily life and in modern society.
• Those wanting to further their education: After ABET Level 3, you can then pursue  ABET Level 4. This level serves as a very crucial stepping stone. If successful upon completion and you are 21 years old or older, it qualifies you to enroll for Adult Matric where you will then get your full National Senior Certificate (NQF Level 4).

Low-Skilled Employees

• Workers needing to upskill themselves: Employees in low-skill positions who want to to be more involved and take on more responsibilities to potentially increase their earning.
• Workplace safety and efficiency: Employers looking to lower the risk of accidents that might occur and improve their communication, literacy, and numeracy among the workforce. 

• Career Advancement: After completing ABET Level 3, you will then pursue ABET Level 4 (equivalent to Grade 9), which provides all the basic skills that are needed for an entry-level job and is a stepping stone towards achieving your Adult Matric certificate.
• Essential Skills: It teaches foundational literacy, numeracy, and communication skills that are necessary for your everyday life and other professional tasks.
• Increased Confidence: Your self-esteem will be improved, you’ll gain satisfaction in life, and mental health will improve among adult learners.
• Flexible Learning: Your learning schedule is flexible and there are community-based centers that help adults balance out their education with work and other important family responsibilities.

ABET training providers give you a placement assessment (or pre-assessment tests) and later decide which level to place you in based on your results. This assessment decides your current competency in foundational reading, writing, and numeracy to make sure that you are placed exactly where you should be, based on your skillset.

• Placement Assessment Results: Your performance on your pre-assessment test decides whether you are ready for the foundational basic instruction (Pre-ABET) or need to start at a higher ABET level.
• Formal School Records: If you have got any old school report, your provider will use these to decide where you should start based on your results.
• Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): They will evaluate your current life experience, work background, and informal learning so that you don't repeat the current skills you already have. 

Your next immediate step after completing your ABET Level 3 is ABET Level 4 (equivalent to NQF Level 1). This qualification is the equivalent to Grade 9, which opens the pathway to vocational training and a higher adult education. 

Here’s a breakdown of the pathway you can take moving forward with your ABET Level 3:

Step Up to ABET Level 4

• Level 4 is an NQF Level 1 qualification, equivalent to Grade 9 in the traditional schooling system.
• It focuses mainly on strengthening literacy, numeracy, and life skills, preparing learners for further education or entry-level work.

Transition to Adult Matric (Senior Certificate Amended)

• Once you have completed ABET Level 4, you can then enroll in Adult Matric (21 Years and older).
• This allows you to achieve a full legitimate Matric certificate (Grade 12 certificate, NQF Level 4)This opens doors to universities, colleges, and further career options.

Vocational Training (NC(V))

• As an alternate option, learners can choose to enter National Certificate Vocational (NC(V)) programmes. These programmes are practical, career-based courses in fields, such as engineering, business, or hospitality.

Short Skills Courses

• Many institutions offer short skill courses like computer literacy, office administration, bookkeeping, or other skills-based courses together with ABET Level 4.
• These courses boosts your chances of employment, while still working towards your Matric certificate.
